Quick News Roundup: 12/02/10

Happy December and Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish readers.

Domestic News: A federal judge rejected a lawsuit by Liberty University regarding the recently passed federal healthcare overhaul stating that they did not see enough evidence to sustain their claim that the legislation would require abortion funding. Dr. Leroy Carhart is officially moving to Maryland to perform late term abortions. Following Nebraska's recent legislation prohibiting most abortions after 20 weeks, Dr. Carhart decided to move his operation to Maryland. As a Maryland resident, I'm outraged and hope locals fight to keep the disgusting procedure out of my home state. Pro-Life groups, including the Americans United for Life Action, are publicly lobbying Republican House Leadership to prevent Congressman Fred Upton (R-MI) from becoming the new Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee citing his views on life issues. The committee's scope can be reviewed here. Upton's rankings by abortion issues groups can be found here.

International News: Argentina is having its first debate on legalizing abortion in the nation's history. 50 lawmakers in the Argentinian House of Deputies has co-sponsored legislation which would legalize abortion in the first 12 weeks of a pregnancy. The Commission of Penal Legislation is set to look at the legislation when the next legislative session begins. Debate continues in Canada regarding Roxanne's Law, a law to prohibit coerced abortions. Women have been testifying in favor of it before Parliament.

Discussion Topic: Sorry, my brain's a little fried with all the traveling I've been doing lately. Not sure what discussion topic to post - so take this to be an open discussion topic. Discuss the news, the topics I've brought up, or anything else you want to discuss.

Keeping women alive: respecting women: wanting women to be able to protect their lives, health, and future fertility: and of course protecting the child victims of paedophole rape from forced pregnancy - all of that is summarised by you as "disgusting".

To be pro-life is to be misogynistic.

Sadly, the federal judge is right: pro-life pressure ensured the healthcare overhaul will make abortion more difficult for women to access. Of course, being pro-lifers, that means it's important to keep attacking any healthcare provision for women, including contraception.

or anything else you want to discuss.

Why do pro-lifers hate women so much?

I'm sure they were talking about Doctors.

Someday, men will find a way to get pregnant, and pro-life will say they can't have abortions either.

Oh, the doctors are disgusting, for wanting to enable women to be able to protect their lives, health, and future fertility. Right. What a disgusting set of things for doctors to want!

Oh, pro-life women have abortions. Pro-life just means you want to control what other people do, not that you want to be forced yourself.

You mean they want to control what other women do, right? Because they're all misogynists. Pro-lifers only want you to keep your kid if it's a boy, otherwise you're home free.

Why do you hate fetuses so much? Did you get beat up by a bunch of fetuses as a kid or something?

Lol.

Since the misogynist thing seems to keep coming up:

Yes. Thanks for correcting me.

Pro-lifers only want you to keep your kid if it's a boy, otherwise you're home free.

Oh, I've never noticed that pro-lifers care about the kid once the kid's cute lil fetus days are over. Pro-lifers only want to control and abuse women: hence the disgust with doctors who actually want to help.

Why do you hate fetuses so much?

Ah, the old silly pro-life standby: our motivation is hate for women, so YOUR motivation must be hate for fetuses! No, dear, you're projecting.

Monica: Since the misogynist thing seems to keep coming up

And always will, regardless of what BS propaganda pro-lifers put together, when on sites like these you have the news that only three hundred doctors in the US are willing to help women who need an abortion in late pregnancy, is bad news because it should be even less.

Or the celebratory post about women veterans being denied healthcare. You know. Crap like that just keeps oozing out...

I'd like to see how the abortion advocates reconcile this with their story that late-term abortions are only ever done to save the mother's life.

And so what if some pro-lifers have abortions? Many more don't. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Does that mean slavery was okay?

Some pro-lifers have abortions. What a shocker!

These women are panicking and under severe emotional duress, so of course they aren't likely to stick to their principles.

If this proves anything, it just proves some pro-life women are hypocritical. It doesn't mention all the pro-lifers that don't get abortions.

Consider their logic:
P1. Sometimes, people that are under severe psychological duress will make selfish decisions that are not in keeping with sound logic and their moral code.
C: It's perfectly fine to strip unborn babies of their most basic human rights, and to slaughter them by the millions for the socioeconomic well-being of their parents.

That doesn't make much sense.

You'll have to find an abortion advocate and ask them. Alexir on the Veterans thread turns out to be enthusiastically in favour of making female soldiers have early abortions under threat of court martial: why don't you ask them?

And so what if some pro-lifers have abortions? Many more don't.

No pro-life man has an abortion, though he may well want his wife or his daughters to have abortions. Pro-life women have abortions when they need them, same as any other woman.

vIt's perfectly fine to strip unborn babies of their most basic human rights

There is no basic human right to make use of another human body against her will.

Pro-lifers don't add exception to women who want abortions because they're distressed. The most common exceptions made are for the cases of rape and significant threat to the mother's life. That said, you're not really pro-life if you have an abortion or, to Yonmei's point, if you want someone else to have an abortion.

Which feeling is why pro-life women who have abortions lie about it - claim they were coerced (usually traducing the clinic staff); or of course do a big It Never Happened...

Being pro-life is all about what you want other people to do, not about what you yourself do.

Nulono, you already said that.

Yonmei:

Technically that just makes them pro-choice women claiming to be pro-life.

No, they're still pro-life if they want to force other women through pregnancy.

Pro-choice women identifying themselves as pro-life exist - DarkCougar, who comments here sometimes, made clear at one point that her beliefs are pro-choice but she's unwilling to identify herself as anything but pro-life.

Yeah, you said that, a couple times. You do realize that the dictionary doesn't change just because you keep repeating yourself, right? I'm all for having dreams and passion, but passionately bashing your head into the wall that is reality isn't the same thing.
